The Constitution of India:
an evolving design
Constitutionalism in India has a unique
history. The initial impetus came from
the colonial masters who undertook
several steps to constitutionalize India
in accordance with their ideological
priority. Nonetheless, they laid the

Chakrabarty
India. This is one side of the story. The
nationalist intervention is its’ another
part which also needs to be grasped to
understand the complex processes that
finally culminated in the making of the
1950 Constitution of India.
