56. History of EVM in India

The concept of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) was first introduced in India in
1982 and since then EVMs have been instrumental in enhancing the democratic
process in India. Providing a more accurate and efficient method of counting votes

as compared to the traditional paper ballots, EVMs have helped in minimizing
electoral fraud, such as booth capturing and ballot tampering, which were
prevalent issues with manual voting system. Moreover, the use of EVMs allows for
faster announcement of election results since counting and compilation of votes

take significantly less time compared to manual methods.
