18. Performance of Independent Candidates in
General Elections 1952 to 2019
In the first Lok Sabha Elections which were held in 1952, out of the total 1874 contestants, 533
were independent candidates. A total of 37 independent candidates were elected in the first Lok
Sabha while deposits of 360 independent candidates were forfeited. In General Elections 1957,
out of the total 1519 contestants 481 were independent candidates. 42 independents

candidates were elected in the 2 Lok Sabha while deposits of 324 independent candidates were
forfeited. In General Elections 1962, out of the total 1985 contestants, 479 were independent

candidates. Out of them 20 got elected to the 3 Lok Sabha while deposits of 378 candidates
got forfeited.
