35. Women Leadership in Lok Sabha






        Since its inception, Indian democracy has been witness to the constant progress and evolution
        of  the  women  leadership  of  the  nation.  Women  members  were  an  integral  part  of  the

        constituent assembly which played a key role in shaping the democratic ethos of independent

        India. Since the first general elections organized in 1952 to the elections of 17  Lok Sabha held
        in  2019,  there  has  been  a  continuous  growth  of  participation  of  women  in  the  nation’s

        leadership.































































        The representation of the women which was 22 in the second Lok Sabha in 1957 has increased
        to 78 in 2019. The strength of women which was 4.45% of the lower house of the parliament in
        1957 increased to 14.36% in 2019. Also, the number of women who contested in 1957 was 45,
        which increased to 726 in 2019.
