to hold elections to the office of the President and Vice President of India, Lower House of
        Parliament, Upper House (using Proportional representation), State Legislative Assembly and

        Council at regular periodic intervals. The Constitution provides for the Election Commission to
        be either a single member or a multi-member body, depending on the evolving requirements
        over time.

        The  first  Chief  Election  Commissioner  was  appointed  on  March  21,1950.  The  present

        Commission is a three-member body with Sh. Rajiv Kumar, as the Chief Election Commissioner,
        Sh. Anup Chandra Pandey and Sh. Arun Goel as the Election Commissioners.
