66. Saksham App: Enabling e-Democracy

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is taking significant strides to simplify the
voter identification and registration process for individuals with disabilities (PwDs)
by introducing customized services through a newly launched program. PwDs can
now utilize a specially designed app, accessible on both Android and iOS phones, to

share their essential details with the Election Commission.

Under this initiative, first-time voters are required to provide their name, address,
mobile number, State, District, and Assembly Constituency details. Registered

voters, on the other hand, need to furnish their EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card)
number found on their voter ID card. Once this information is submitted, a booth-
level officer is assigned to visit the voter at home to complete any remaining

formalities. Subsequently, the Voter ID cards are dispatched to the provided
address. The Saksham App, in addition to streamlining the registration process, also
allows PwDs to request a wheelchair for polling day.
