old craft and related products, I took initiative with
full accountability for Protection and Promotion of
traditional old age craft and related product under the
Intellectual Property Right:for protection & promotion of
traditional crafts through Geographical Indication (GI)
registration under Intellectual Property Rights and due
to this initiative Varanasi and Eastern Uttar PradesUttar
Prades region has 12 GI granted and 39 products of
UP, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand are under GI
registration process with his facilitation.
More than 2 million people have get legally protected
their traditional products under IPR and it is highest
in World in one Geographical area where GI craft is
existing and growing in a comprehensive way for their
uniqueness and excellent human skill in Varanasi and
Eastern UP region.
Few are the very important GI registered products like
- Banaras Brocade and Sarees, Handmade carpet of
Bhadohi, Banaras Gulabi Meenakari, Varanasi Wooden
Lacquerware & Toys, Mirzapur Handmade Dari,
Nizamabad Black Pottery, Banaras Metal Repousee
craft, Banaras Glass Beads, Ghazipur Wall Hanging,
Varanasi Soft Stone Jali work and Chunar Balua
Patthar(Sand Stone) & Gorakhpur Terracotta. Through
this initiative nearly 2 million artisans, weavers and
related stakeholder’s products has legally protected and
more than Rs.20500 Crore annual turnover is recorded
on in these GI crafts at Varanasi and Eastern UP region
and the revival of traditional craft has begun with the
dignity.

What is GI?
Geographical Indications (GIs) means on indications
which identifies goods as agricultural goods, natural
goods or manufactured goods as originating or
manufactured in the territory of a country or a region or
locality is that territory where a given quality, reputation
or characteristics of such goods is essentially attributable
to its geographical origin and in case where such goods
are manufactured, goods one of the activities of either
the production or of processing or preparation of goods
concerned takes place in such territory region or locality
as the case may be place names are sometimes used to
identify a product. For ex-Banaras Brocades & Sarees,
Lucknow Chikankari, , Bhadohi Carpet, Banaras
Gulabi Meenakari, Wooden Lacqueare & Toys, Metal
Repousy Craft, Soft Stone Jali work and many more.
